Many
people do not realise that Haut Provence in the winter is just as
inspiring and enticing as it is during the rest of the
year. We have all the winter pleasures at our doorstep, that you would
expect to find, and some that you would not (like...., how about sun
bathing on the beach in October or November or certain days in Jan.,
Feb. March).
Whether you are interested in just the seasonal periods of Christmas and or the New Year or whether you are looking for a winter retreat to let yourself into a creational frame of mind or just simply want to reflect and relax, then La Colle could be the place for you! More than 40 years ago the difference between Summer and Winter in the North of Europe was very defined. Snow and very crisp days and nights; now it's just a mix of cold grey damp days, or cold and grey damp days. Occasionally the North of Europe may get a good pounding of snow this usually results in the stopping of all usual activity and leads to traffic and transport chaos. Here we have that one vital ingredient that makes winter so agreeable and that is....... Sun In Jan, Feb and March we have more sunny days than other types of days and many a winters day permits us to wonder around looking at clear crystal blue skies, which actually allows us to appreciate the spectacular landscape better then at any other time of the year.
Of course we have days when the mist rises from the valley, days when the clouds form to let us have snow. But even then they are spectacular!
Although we can say that we are not covered in snow all the time, we are not high enough at 630m above sea level, we are in an area that has access to snow through out winter. We can have fun at all those winter sports that we so love. Lurs the mountain opposite us is in fact one of the most southerner ski stations in the south of France. It is true to say that it is not the most impressive, good really for a play in the snow, as the local Marie (town council) isn't committed enough to develop the station. However when you get there, it is a good day out for the kids as they can touch and play in it, toboggan on it, there is even ski de fond, and for us skiers, well there's a practice reminder slope. ( The other more interesting slopes have been closed because of the new EC rules)
Yet not one hour away there are the Southern Alps.! Here all serious skiers (or not so serious) can find all the slopes they want! I personally go every Friday to the one of their enchanting valleys. So don't expect to get me on an Friday afternoon. I'll be whistling down one of the slopes in probably Vars, one of my favorites, as you are always guarantied to get a ski there. I set off in the morning around 10.00 and get there just before 12.00, by the time I've changed, the half day ski passes are on sale and off I go to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. Vars although further away than some of the others of which there are several to choose from, is a well developed site and offers 160 kms of ski-able area with snow cannons to guarantee the pleasure. I usually get back about 8 in the evening tired but very refreshed from the experience.
But then not everybody wants to ski. What else can you do in Provence in the winter.......!
